Recap: Baltic Gravel 33

Parking: Baltic, OH ballfields behind East Main Kitchen & Coffee.

5 cyclists. 32.5 miles. 3845 feet of elevation gain. Route at bottom of post. Tim Cristy developed this route to fill in an area east of Charm where we do not have an existing route. By looking at satellite view of the area he picked what looked like gravel roads and we explored it. It turns out Tim is good at developing routes and this particular route is 70% gravel. Around two miles into the route the road turns into gravel and throughout the route there are short pavement sections to connect the gravel. Gravel roads ranged from a mix of packed gravel/dirt to recently graded surfaces with fresh chunky gravel. Even the climbs were a mix of long packed gravel and short punchy gravel with loose surfaces. Skinnier tires did have trouble hooking up on some climbs.

As usual we stopped along the way to say hi to dogs, horses, donkeys, pigs, goats and the occasional Amish. We saw an interesting sign (see photos) and tried to outpace a manure spreader but got passed on the ridge. It was stinky. At the next turn Amanda realized that she had been past this particular farm before and we looked to the back of the property to see zebras! Four of the zebras eventually moved closer and we snapped some photos. Check the photoset below for pics and the farm is marked as a POI on the route at mile 13.8. For lunch we stopped in Fresno at White Eyes Pizza & Takeout and sat in the shade under the trees in the back. Food and supplies are available when open. Weather was nice to start in the low 60’s and topped out in low 80’s. Some headwind along the way.
