Fox / Carr Murder Gravel Grinder

  • Buckeye Trail High School 65555 Wintergreen Rd, Lore City, OH 43755-9715 (map)

We meet at the Buckeye Trail High School at 7:45am Sunday, August 11. Rolling at 8:00am. Buckeye Trail HS is just north of Old Washington, OH, which is located on Interstate 70, near Cambridge. I suspect the group will return to the start about 4pm.

This is a gravel grinder to retrace the key locations involving one of Ohio's most gruesome murders, the 1869 murder of Louiza Catherine Fox. We will visit the site of the crime, Louiza's nearby grave, the site of the trial/hanging for the murderer, and his final resting spot.

There are two routes.
Longer Route:
The longer route is an advance gravel grinder with more than 90 miles and at least 7000 feet of climbing. The lead group pace will be 13mph or so. We will stop for food/water approximately halfway in St Clairsville OH. Bring money for the food stop. Riders should be confident in their ability to ride this distance on this kind of terrain. Please bring a GPS device with the route loaded so that you are capable of navigating the area should the group split up. This is not a "beginner-friendly, no drop ride".

Shorter Route:
A shorter route is available. It has 50 miles and covers the murder site and Fox grave. It does NOT have good food or water options, so you will need to pack everything for the ride (there is actually a BP station at Mile 41). This route covers the first and last quarter of the longer route, cutting out the middle 43 miles over to St Clairsville and back. There will not be a ride leader for the shorter route.
